Connector for Windows 10 to 2012 R2 Essentials Now Available

This information just came in today:

Windows 10 Client Connector for connecting to Windows Server 2012 R2 is now Released via Download Center

We have now officially released the Windows 10 connector for connecting to Windows Server 2012 R2 via Download Center. It is available from the following URL:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/3/2/8/3280252F-E15C-4

Please note: we do not have the fix for the auto-download and installation released yet. So you have to manually download and install this client connector on the Windows 10 client machine. Then you can run the client deploy to start the connecting.

For the servers in-place upgraded from Windows 7, 8.1 to 10,  you will need to manually download and install this client connector and do the connecting again.

If the machine ID is the same after the upgrade, then everything will be working automatically. However if the machine ID is somehow changed during the upgrade, then it will be treated as a new client, so you have to leave the domain and connect to the Essentials server again. The old client back up data will be in the archive folder on the Essentials server, and you can still use that to do the restore back to the upgraded Windows 10 client.

Windows 10 One Day More!

image

Tomorrow (29-Jul-2015) is the official release date of Windows 10

In honor of this event, here’s my song parody to the tune of “Do You Hear The People Sing” from Les Misérables:

Do you hear the people cheer?
Knowing the day is drawing near?
It is the time for all the people
Who will want to get it first!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the news that we all want
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes.

Will you join in this event?
Who will be strong and wait with me?
Beyond the last release
Is there a world you long to see?
Then join in this time
That will give you the right to be free!

Do you hear the people scream?
Windows 10 will soon be here
It is the download that the people
Who have waited long so long to cheer!
When the download finally starts
Pray that the Internet won’t crash
There is a life about to start
And it’s coming fast!

Will you load it right away?
So that the news may travel fast?
Some will wait, but some will say
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The cheers of the people
Will make the whole world dance!

Do you hear the people sing?
Windows 10 is not a dream
It is the update that the people
Who have waited so long to see!
When today with the setting sun
And all the backups have been done
There is a life about to start
And it’s Windows 10!

Will there be a Windows Server Essentials 2016?

imageWindows 10 for desktops and mobile devices is just around the corner.

That would be July 29th if you’ve been on vacation! –>

And … the next version of Windows Server will be Windows Server 2016.

The current version is Windows Server 2012, which includes a specific (post-SBS) version called Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.

So, it is only fair to have people ask: “Will there be also be a Windows Server 2016 Essentials (W2016E for short) released?”image

The following public Technet article mentions W2016E by name. So it would be a reasonable conclusion to think that they are planning on a W2016E version.

But — given that Server 2016 will not be rolled out until next year, things can always change.

BOA Dropping Windows Mobile Phone App

wp_ss_20150219_0002I am not a happy camper with both Bank of America (BOA) and Microsoft.

Earlier this month I started to receive the following message whenever I logged onto my BOA phone app from my Nokia Lumia 920 –>

So, what’s their definition of “soon”?

You have to go to the Windows Phone App store to find that in “early March 2015” they will stop supporting this app on the Windows Phone platform!

image

I utilize the electronic check deposit feature of their phone l the time.

Their suggestion that I do my mobile checking through the browser is a farce, since their web site does not provide the capability of electronic check deposit.

Why am I upset with Microsoft? Because it appears that BOA is waling away from the Windows Phone platform, and I’m not hearing anything from Microsoft on this situation. If BOA walks, whose next? And what does that say about the future of the Windows Phone platform?

P.S. Now it looks like both BOA and Chase are moving away from the Windows Phone platform! click here

Windows Live Writer 2012 for WordPress

I recently replaced my 8 year old workstation with a new Windows 8.1 system with an SSD drive. One of the  software apps I use all the time is Windows Live Writer 2012 to post blogs to my website.

Thanks to Scott Hanselman for his post on where to download Live Writer 2012. I was glad to see that someone else also loves using Live Writer!

Here are the steps to installing it on your workstation:

  • Download the software from this link:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/essentials
  • Select the option to “Choose the programs you want to install”
    image
  • Make sure that Writer is the only program checked

  • Select the blog service you use (WordPress, in my case)

  • Enter your login and password for your blog site

Bootstrapper error during Office 2013 installation

I was attempting to install Office 2013 Professional Plus on a new workstation that had already been joined to the SBS 2011 domain. It kept crashing just a few minutes into the intallation with the error message: “Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper has stopped working”.

image

If you search the Microsoft forums, you will see several recommendations, including:

  • Remove all prior installations of Microsoft Office
  • Make sure that the Task Scheduler is running
  • Try burning the Office .iso to a DVD to do the install

In my case, we were good in all those departments.

Then I came across a forum post that raised the question:

Have you implemented a Cryptolocker group policy at your site?

Oh, my, yes! I quickly logged onto the server, moved the new workstation out of its normal OU. Voila! Office 2013 installed immediately.

Samsung Data Migration and Dell Workstation

I’m working on a new Dell XPS 8700 that was just delivered, with Windows 8.1 pre-installed and a 1TB SATA drive. I ordered a Samsung SSD 850 Pro 500GB drive to use as the system drive. I’ve used the Samsung Data Migration cloning software successfully on a scratch install of Windows 8.1, but this is the first time to try it with Windows 8.1 pre-installed on the computer.

You install the Samsung Data Migration utility onto the computer to the existing hard drive. I then connected the SSD drive to a USB3 port using a USB3 data & power connector.

Note: Do not connect the SSD drive until the Samsung software has been installed.

  • Attempt #1: I ran the Data Migration wizard, and it came back saying that there was an issue with defragging the source disk.
  • Attempt #2: I install Piriform’s Defraggler and did a full defrag (about one hour). I reran the wizard and this time it reported that there was an issue with the source disk. I rebooted the computer and tried again, and received same error.
  • Attempt #3: I then do a sfc /scanow followed by a chkdsk /f c: – both had no issues or errors. I rebooted the computer and tried again. Same issue. I tried plugging the USB3 cable into other ports. Same issue, again.
  • Attempt #4: I then proceed to uninstall all the Dell add-on stuff (data protection, etc.) and then rebooted the computer. Voila! This time when I ran the wizard, we successfully clones the hard drive to the SSD drive.

After powering down the workstation, I unhooked the SATA drive and connected the SSD drive in its place. I powered up the system and it successfully started up Windows 8.1
