GetDataBack True Story

This is a true story that happened recently to me. I was taking my daily evening walk around our neighborhood a few days ago, and a man working in his yard stopped me and said, “you’re Kevin, the computer guy. right?”

image

Long story short – he had a disk drive that had crashed, and wanted to know if there was anything I could do to recover some documents and pictures from it. He then tells me that he had two other computer people check out the drive, and they both said that the data was unrecoverable. One person, that he describes as a “computer expert”, told him that he has a lot of expensive tools and utilities at his disposal, and that the disk is trash.

I asked if I could give it a try. I took the disk back home, hooked it up to my computer, and ran GetDataBack (from Runtime Software). It took several hours for it to complete, but once it was done, I was able to locate and retrieve over 400 documents, 343 pictures, and 62 music files.

Then I suggested that he get a backup drive or back it up to the cloud!

Syncing Windows Time W32TM

Every so often, I run into a server with Windows Time (W32tm) issues, such as Event 29, 38 or 47. Microsoft article KB 875424 addresses these issues, and it’s resolution. Here are the specific steps I use (with thanks to my fellow SBS MVP’s who provided the information):

View currently configured W32TM NTP server(s ):

net time /querysntp

Configure W32TM:

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:”0.pool.ntp.org 1.pool.ntp.org 2.pool.ntp.org”,0x8
w32tm /config /update
net stop w32time
net start w32time
w32tm /resync /nowait

If you wish, create a batch file with the above five commands and you should be good to go!

Get Data Back from Crashed Drive

You know the drill – someone calls you in a panic because their computer won’t reboot. You ask if they’ve been experiencing problems recently. And they go on to tell you how the computer had been crashing more frequently of late, and that sometimes they have to reboot it several times, etc, etc, etc!

I had a neighbor who stopped me and said “You’re the computer guy, aren’t you?”. Long story short, his computer had been acting up and finally would not boot. He had two different people/places take a look at the drive and declared that the drive was dead and the data was not recoverable. One of those people said that he had a vast array of expensive tools at his disposal, and could not do anything with the drive.

I asked if I could take a look at it. I brought the drive back to my workbench, hooked it up to a computer, and ran my trusty GetDataBack utility from Runtime Software. Sure, it took 4 hours to run, but once it did, it located over 800 documents, photos and music files!

Don’t let the $79 price scare you away. Unlike a lot of software, this is a one time $79 price with free lifetime updates! If you’re an I.T. technician, you should have this in your I,.T. toolkit!

Yes, I have also heard of the trick of putting the drive in a sealed air-tight bag and put it in the freezer for 15 minutes. I’ve tried that several times, without success.

Finally, my good MVP buddy Mick from Down Under suggested looking at some of the freeware offered by MiniTool. I’ll write more about those in another blog post.

Adobe Flash Player Update Error

Over the past week or so, I have encountered several workstations with a pop-up error window reporting that “Adobe Flash Player Update Service 11.3.r300 encountered a problem and needed to close.”

image

If you search the Internet, you will see that many people have encountered this issue. Early reports was that it was only affecting Mozilla Firefox users. But users have since reported getting the same error on workstations without Firefox. So it is not a browser-based issue.

For now, here is what I am doing as a quick-fix (hopefully) when I encounter this on a workstation:

  • Startup the Flash Player Settings Manager
    • Go to Control Panel, and if necessary switch away from ‘Category’ view, then double click on the Flash Player icon
      image
    • Alternately, you may click Start –> Run –> FlashPlayerCPLApp.cpl
  • This will open the Flash Player Settings Manager
  • Click on the Advanced tab, and then click to select “Notify me to install updates
    image
  • Then click on the Storage tab, then click “Local Storage Settings by Site”, and remove any sites that you cannot identify.

  • Reboot your computer

Hope this helps you!

Tampa Bay SBS User Group Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Tampa Bay SBS Usergroup (TBSBSUG) takes place tonight (Thursday July 12th). We will gather early for dinner at the Winghouse on 4th street in St Petersburg, followed by our meeting that starts at 6:30pm.

image

This is an important meeting, given the announcements this week on the upcoming releases of Windows Server 2012, and it’s impact on those who have been selling and supporting the Small business Server product.

We are honored that Kevin Beares (Microsoft) will be speaking with us to get our feedback and to discuss some of the misconceptions surrounding this week’s announcements.

For more information, please contact Rayanne, the TBSBSUG lead.

Windows 8 Release Date Schedule Announced!

At the Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference today, Microsoft announced that the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) version of Windows 8 will be made available to manufacturers (OEMs) in the first week of August. That’s when vendors such as Dell, HP and others can begin their work to customize the Windows 8 process as it will be installed on their computers.

Windows 8 will be available in retail stores for purchase by late October 2012.

The price for upgrading a workstation from XP, Vista and Windows 7 to Windows 8 will be $39.99, if you download the update online.

ADSI Edit Missing Sections

The good news: the wizards that are built into the Microsoft SBS server product are so good that I rarely have a need to use any of the regular utilities (command-line or GUI) that comes with the Microsoft server products.

The bad news: when I do need to use one of those utilties, I always feel like I’m using it for the first time.

ADSI Edit is one of those utilities. I recently needed to run it on an SBS 2008 server for an Exchange issue I was working on. After starting it up (Start –> Run –> Adsiedit.msc) and using the defaults for the “Connect to:” , something looked wrong. That’s when I realized that the Schema and Configuration sections were not displaying. And it was the Configuration section that I needed.

image

Of course, the answer was simple — once I found the answer!

I just needed to go back and select Connect to –> Schema, and then Connect to –> Configuration.

TechEd 2012 Multipoint Presentation

What a busy week it has been at TechEd here in Orlando. A lot of walking!!!

Today I facilitated a second Birds of a Feather session on “Windows MultiPoint Server Deployment” – MultiPoint Server brings back the concept of thin computing. Have you seen issues with IP addresses, USB devices, or accessing accounts and files? Bring your issues and compliments. How well does MultiPoint fit into the workplace?

The audience was sparse for this topic, but we still had a great opportunity to talk and dialog.
