How do I Logoff from Windows Server 2012?

The familiar Elizabeth Barrett Browning quote (“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways”) comes to mind when I am asked: How do I logoff from Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012, or simply lock down my screen????

Option 1: from the Windows Metro screen, click on the User name in the top right hand corner, and then click Lock or Sign out

Option 2: from the Windows Desktop screen, press Windows+L to lock down your session, or press Windows+R, and type shutdown –l to logoff,

Option 3: and finally there is the familiar “three finger salute”, more commonly known as Ctrl-Alt-Del. This works from both the Metro screen and the Desktop screen, and is my favorite method for locking down a station or logging off.

Mouse without Borders

The current “cool” thing is to have more than one monitor on your workstation.

But, what if you have multiple computers that you regularly use at your office or workbench? Perhaps your primary workstation with two screens, a laptop you are using for some development work, and your server?

Up until now, you would either have three keyboards/mice, or you would be using a KVM (keyboard/video/mouse) device to share between the computers.

But now you have another choice — Mouse without Borders

Mouse without Borders (MWB) was developed in Microsoft’s “The Garage” – a company wide program that encourages grass roots invention, tinkering and exploring new ideas.

With MWB you can use one mouse and one keyboard to control up to four separate computers, with no additional hardware! Not only can you move your mouse seamlessly from screen to screen, but just like you can move (drag) a file from one folder to another, you can drag files and folders from one computer to another with MWB!

Note: AFAIK, it only works with Windows operating systems. Give it a try!

Exchange Defender Cloudshare

Vlad Mazek (CEO, Own Web Now) announced the ExchangeDefender CloudShare file sharing and synchronization platform on July 19, 2012.

There is a one page overview that compares CloudShare to Dropbox, YouSendIt, Google, Skydrive and Box on his site.

WHS System Drive Freezing Up

I have a Windows Home Server (WHS) unit installed at nearly every onee of my customers. I’ve also installed Windows Storage Server Essentials 2011 (WSSE) at two larger sites. The WHS units are working wonderfully, but as they get older, the chances of a drive failure increases.

I had a customer earlier this week whose WHS unit kept freezing up every day.

I checked memory and it was OK. I then ran chkdsk on each of the three installed drives. Turns out that the Data partition on the first (system) drive was the culprit.

To resolve the issue I followed the excellent steps to Successfully Clone and Upgrade a WHS System Drive from Alex Kuretz. I used Storagecraft’s ShadowProtect IT Edition to make an exact duplicate of the drive.

Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA)

In the SBS world, I primarily install and recommend Dell servers. Dell’s OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) is a required install on every Dell server I manage.

You can locate and download the latest version of OMSA here. The download executable file is just under 200MB in size. Once it is downloaded, go ahead and install it. It will create a C:\OpenManage directory.

To start things up, click on the setup.exe program under C:\OpenManage\Windows folder. The first thing it will do is run a pre-requisite check. You will want to review the pre-req screen and address any specific issues.

I did this on an existing Dell T310 recently, and it reported that the firmware level for my Perc 6/I adapter did not meet minimum version requirements.

The pre-req report provides a link provided, which will reported both my current driver and firmware levels installed, and what levels (at a minimum) were required.

In this case, upgrading the Perc 6/I firmware requires a reboot of the server. After rebooting, restart the OMSA setup.exe, and after the pre-req scan completes, click on the Server Administrator button on the lower right to begin installation of OMSA. Installation proceeds and completes in just a few minutes.

Once the installation is completed, you will want to add OMSA to your quick launch taskbar – icon image

When you start up OMSA you will get a warning about the website’s security certificate. Click to continue for now, and start exploring your server.

P.S. be sure to clean up things by deleting the OMSA download file and the C:\OpenManage install directory
