Windows Phone Dilemma

I have been using an Apple iPhone for the past 3 years, and for the most part have enjoyed using it. The iPhone replaced my older Windows Mobile 6 phone. I switched to the iPhone as many of my customers had iPhones and I wanted to be able to support them.

In the past year, several of my customers have purchased Android phones. I have had good success with the Android phones, the biggest issue being  its interface with Microsoft’s Exchange server. But, we have that all working now.

Windows Phone 7.5

Soon after the first of the year, I started talking with people who had switched over to the Windows 7 phone (code name Mango) – such as the Samsung Focus or the Nokia Lumia. In fact the raves were so great, I had all but convinced myself that I would switch to the Nokia Lumia 900 as soon as my two year agreement with my iPhone was up.

Windows Phone 8

Well my two year period ended this month. So today I went to the AT&T web site to purchase the phone. I literally came within seconds of clicking on the final “Are you sure you want to buy this phone?” button, when, for some unknown reason, I decided to cancel my purchase and told myself to wait until I was back at my office.

Well, this evening as I’m checking my email, I read that Microsoft officially announced their new Windows Phone 8, to be available later this year.

That’s great, or so I thought – I’ll get the Nokia Lumia 900 now, and then upgrade to Windows Phone 8 when it’s released.

WRONG!!!!

According to Microsoft’s Windows Phone Team Blog, current Windows 7 phones will NOT be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 8. To appease those who may have just bought a Nokia Lumia phone, Microsoft did say that they would provide a software update for Windows 7 users that will give them the Windows Phone 8 Start screen.

A line from a popular song says it best: That don’t impress me much.

I suspect I’ll just hang onto my iPhone 4 until such time as Windows Phone 8 is available and I can buy a phone that supports it.

TechEd 2012 Thoughts

A008 (Large)s a Microsoft MVP for Small Business Servers and a Small/Medium Business (SMB) I.T. consultant, the conferences, seminars and user groups that I routinely attend or speak at are usually geared for the SBS/SMB marketplace. And that’s all great!

So to have an opportunity to attend and work at Microsoft’s TechEd North America conference (7,000+ attendees) this week was a huge thrill and honor for me.

002 (Large)I had a chance to meet, interact and speak with I.T. professionals  representing everything from large financial and commercial companies to colleges and universities.

The convention floor was jammed pack with vendors and presenters. I have done my share of “manning a booth” at conferences but this was amazing.

I understand that it took 3 weeks to set up the hundreds (if not thousands) of workstations that were available for use.

I was asked to facilitate two of the TechEd’s Birds of a Feather sessions. The first was on Advanced Architecture for Microsoft Sharepoint 2010, and the second was on Windows Multipoint Server Deployment.

Eriq Neale–Friends O’ Mine

My good friend and Microsoft MVP buddy, Eriq Neale, passed away last night after a courageous battle with cancer. Four years ago, at a Microsoft SBS training session, Eriq pulled out his guitar and sang this song: Friends O’ Mine.

The original lyrics are posted below. I took a video of him singing it, changing some of the words to the song.

“Friends O’ Mine”
Well it was ugly but we made it this far
Some have gone but I forget who they are
Now the hangovers are worse but we get through them fine
Sleeping late but were not lazy
Getting older but were still crazy
I’m so glad that I have these friends o mine

It started out at a coffee shop in a most unlikely town
And there were casualties but we made it out anyhow
We stuck together through the good and bad times
Pulp Fiction, Blazing Saddles, and Fast Times
I’m so glad that I have these friends o mine

And jobs girls and obstacles did all but break us down
Night clubs and broken vans in every major town
And I’ve got your back, you’ve got mine
Like Johnny Cash said “I walk the line”
And you can always count on me for one last beer

We saw the world and the world seemed smaller
Were getting wider but not getting no taller
I know we’ve grown up just a little lot of time
Were sleeping late but were not lazy
Were getting older but were still crazy
I’m so glad that I have these friends o mine

So glad that I have these friends o mine
So glad that I have these friends o mine

TechEd 2012 Multipoint Presentation

What a busy week it has been at TechEd here in Orlando. A lot of walking!!!

Today I facilitated a second Birds of a Feather session on “Windows MultiPoint Server Deployment” – MultiPoint Server brings back the concept of thin computing. Have you seen issues with IP addresses, USB devices, or accessing accounts and files? Bring your issues and compliments. How well does MultiPoint fit into the workplace?

The audience was sparse for this topic, but we still had a great opportunity to talk and dialog.

TechEd 2012 Sharepoint Presentation

I finally attended my first Microsoft TechEd conference this year. All I can is “Wow”!

I was asked to speak and facilitate a Birds of a Feather session on the topic of “Advanced Architectures for Microsoft SharePoint 2010”. the room was standing-room only (SRO) – over 100 people.

image

The specifics of this session was listed as: “In this session we discuss advanced SharePoint architectures with specific highlights on service applications, cross-farm services, multi-tenants, and architecting search for performance. We examine pain points from the participants in the group and discuss possible strategies to overcome challenges.”.

To say I was a bit nervous and intimidated is an understatement. But what a great time it was. I really enjoyed talking and speaking with so many people from a wide variety of businesses and technical backgrounds.

Microsoft’s TechEd 2012 Conference

Microsoft’s North America TechEd 2012 conference is set for next week, June 11-14, 2012. General attendance is already sold out!  I’m honored that I have been asked to lead/facilitate two “Birds of a Feather” (BOF) discussion sessions during the week.

LinkedIn Security Breach

Please do not take this lightly!

LinkedIn reported today (June 6, 2012) that a list containing 6.5 million encrypted passwords of LinkedIn users was stolen and posted to the Internet. They say hackers are busy trying to unencrypt these passwords.

I strongly encourage you to go to LinkedIn’s website and change your password ASAP. For more information, please read this PCWorld article on the security breach.

WHS System Drive Freezing Up

I have a Windows Home Server (WHS) unit installed at nearly every onee of my customers. I’ve also installed Windows Storage Server Essentials 2011 (WSSE) at two larger sites. The WHS units are working wonderfully, but as they get older, the chances of a drive failure increases.

I had a customer earlier this week whose WHS unit kept freezing up every day.

image

I checked memory and it was OK. I then ran chkdsk on each of the three installed drives. Turns out that the Data partition on the first (system) drive was the culprit.

To resolve the issue I followed the excellent steps to Successfully Clone and Upgrade a WHS System Drive from Alex Kuretz. I used Storagecraft’s ShadowProtect IT Edition to make an exact duplicate of the drive.

PresentationFontCache CPU Hog

This is one of those “when I get a few minutes” type of issues. On my Windows 7 workstation, I kept seeing Task Manager report that the PresentationFontCache.exe service was using nearly 50% of processor resources on a regular basis. Today I finally decided to fix it, and of course, the solution is fairly easy.

image

Before starting, you will first need to adjust Windows Explorer to show hidden files and protected operating system files. One way to do this is to go to Control Panel –> Appearance –> and under Folder Options, click  ‘Show hidden files and folders’. A new window appears. Click (to enable) ‘Show hidden files, folders, and drives’ and then click (to UNcheck) ‘Hide protected mode operating system files’.

image

Now, to fix the issue at hand:

  1. Drill down C: –> Windows –> ServiceProfiles –> LocalService –> AppData –> Local
  2. Locate and delete all Font*.data files. There will be several of them (FontCache3.0.0.0, FontCache-System, FontCache-S-xxxxxx…_

Reboot your computer, and your computer should be more responsive than before!

Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA)

In the SBS world, I primarily install and recommend Dell servers. Dell’s OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) is a required install on every Dell server I manage.

You can locate and download the latest version of OMSA here. The download executable file is just under 200MB in size. Once it is downloaded, go ahead and install it. It will create a C:\OpenManage directory.

To start things up, click on the setup.exe program under C:\OpenManage\Windows folder. The first thing it will do is run a pre-requisite check. You will want to review the pre-req screen and address any specific issues.

I did this on an existing Dell T310 recently, and it reported that the firmware level for my Perc 6/I adapter did not meet minimum version requirements.

image

The pre-req report provides a link provided, which will reported both my current driver and firmware levels installed, and what levels (at a minimum) were required.

image

In this case, upgrading the Perc 6/I firmware requires a reboot of the server. After rebooting, restart the OMSA setup.exe, and after the pre-req scan completes, click on the Server Administrator button on the lower right to begin installation of OMSA. Installation proceeds and completes in just a few minutes.

image image image

Once the installation is completed, you will want to add OMSA to your quick launch taskbar – icon image

When you start up OMSA you will get a warning about the website’s security certificate. Click to continue for now, and start exploring your server.

P.S. be sure to clean up things by deleting the OMSA download file and the C:\OpenManage install directory
